A Word from Laura September, 2008 Greetings from Indiana! I hope the start of school is going well for you and your child. This month the topic of “News for You” is “Diet Quality and School Performance.” I hope you find it interesting and helpful. I had an interesting email from 10 year-old Avery Zuleger who wrote about the advantages of having ADHD. I think you will find his amazing and insightful comments interesting and uplifting. You can find his email in “Comments from You, My Readers.” Just click on “Comments from You” in the Table of Contents at the right. I trust you watched at least part of the Olympics this summer and were amazed by the performance of swimmer, Michael Phelps. Did you know that he has ADHD? So the next time your child is feeling discouraged and down about himself or has been teased about his ADHD, just remind him/her of Michael’s amazing achievements. The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), a consumer watchdog of the safety of our nation’s food supply, is trying to influence the FDA to change its policy about artificial colors and flavors. In light of recent studies, many governments in western Europe are requiring that foods produced for children be free of artificial colors and flavors. This is not true in the US. If your child has reacted adversely to any of these additives, please go to their website and tell your story. Their site is cspinet.org/new/200808211.html Good luck and best wishes, Laura Stevens, M.S.
